About this talk

Engagement has been a concern in newsrooms, as seen in surveys such as "The State of Technology in Global Newsrooms", conducted by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in 2018, in which are mentioned several studies conducted in 2013, 2014 and so that point to better use of social media by journalists.

The participants will understand the role of science journalism in the engagement of society with regard to science and public communication, and that journalists take ownership of the concepts and reflect on their performance with a view to this engagement of society. Several new hot discussions in the field of journalism, eg, data journalism and open science, as well as the great challenges of post-truth and online misinformation, all address the question that journalism today needs to remember its missions, which go beyond informing, transmitting, and which include gatekeeping, social denunciation, building a pact of trust with the public: the idea of engagement, the discussion about participation and citizenship leads to this, through the appropriation of data by the public and reconstruction of a pact of trust, among other aspects.
